Our Obsessions: Winter Edition

Before I dive into this blog, I want to make something clear: Summer is and always will be the leading lady of seasons. Which I’m sure most (all) of you would agree. But there is one thing that I love about Winter - aside from venturing to the snow, taking a cold winter dip (you can read about this here), and mulled wine (my not-so-guilty pleasure) of course.

I love parking up by the fire and losing myself in the list of books I keep saying I’ll read but never quite get there, watching forgotten films or insightful documentaries, and rediscovering the love of old songs, games, and recipes that really do comfort my soul.

Okay, fine. I admit it - I love Winter ( a lot).

So let’s get into it. Here are all the things that I am obsessed with this Winter…

Reading - Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Daisy Jones & The Six Novel Cover

Okay so I’m only half way through this book as I write this, but guys… it is so good! We’re taken on a journey back to the 70s that is filled with rock, music, love, chaos, passion, and more. The relationship between the rock band, The Six, and their eventual bandmate, Daisy Jones, is one that will draw you in so deep you won’t want to put the book down. Trust me when I say that it is the perfect escape for those Winter blues.

If you needed another reason to pick up this book, it is being turned into a mini TV Series and will be released later this year!

Watching - A Plastic Ocean

A Plastic Ocean Documentary Art

I think it’s pretty obvious why I’m obsessed with this documentary. Sometimes you need something with a little more depth than re-watching Crazy, Stupid, Love for the 10th time. This week I re-watched A Plastic Ocean and it stoked up the fire within me to be more conscious about how my decisions and actions are impacting our ocean. A very fitting and easy way to get involved with Plastic Free July. Education is key, Salty Babes!

Listening - Jorja Smith

Jorja Smith

In my ears. On repeat. I’m in a Jorja Smith bubble and I don’t see it popping anytime soon. Her latest album is beautiful… so is her older music. If you couldn’t tell, I’m obsessed and recommend that you become obsessed too.

You can find her on Spotify here.

Following - Project Blue

Project Blue

If you haven’t come across them already, let me introduce you to Project Blue: a group of young Kiwi creatives, adventurers, and ocean lovers, who are exploring the impacts that plastic has on our seas and documenting it into a film: For The Blue. Their passion is contagious as they share a story of hope for the next generation on Instagram as they get ready for their film's premiere on Friday 6th August 2021. If you’re in Auckland, I highly recommend grabbing yourself a ticket to view this team's amazing work for yourself. I’ll see you there!

You can watch the trailer here.

Doing - Games Nights

Games Night

Why just have a dinner party when you can add some board games or bring some cards and call it a Games Night? This is currently my favourite way to catch up with friends and family. It brings out the best in everyone - we’re talking competitiveness, laughter, light-hearted disagreements (you know the ones). My favourite games are: Cluedo, Charades, Catan, Scrabble, and Monopoly Deal (avoid the board game at all cost).
